Aims and Objectives To instruct an operator to prepare and safely operate various types of Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWP’s) and to obtain an IPAF MEWP Operators Licence (Certificate and PAL card). Candidates can opt to train on 1 or 2 categories of machine. The training is valid for 5 years and is recognised by the Build UK Contractors Group.

At the end of the course the operator will:

• Be aware of the relevant health and safety regulations
• Be aware of accident prevention and control
• Be aware of the needs regarding personal protection
• Be aware of the need to refer to the machine operators manual
• Drive the MEWP safely and manoeuvre the machine as required, to correctly position and carry out the required tasks in a correct and proper manner, inside and outside a building

IPAF Certification
Important - please note: All candidates who undertake IPAF training and pass will get their license and/or certification digitally through IPAF's new app, ePAL. In addition, the Co-ordinator of the booking will receive a digital copy.

The app is available on Apple iOS and Android apps (search ePAL).
We request that delegates download this app to their smart phone ahead of the course.

Pre-Requisites No formal qualifications or experience are necessary.

Candidates must be at least 16 years old and are not required to hold a driving licence.

A good level of comprehension of both written and spoken English is a requirement on all courses. 
Any physical impairment or literacy issues should be discussed with LTC Training Services prior to making a booking so we can best accommodate your needs.

IPAF offer theory test papers in different languages, please let us know prior to the course if this is required.
Candidates must meet the requirements of IPAF’s Health & Fitness Statement.

Course Content The pre-use checks and daily maintenance to be carried out prior to commencing work.
The correct and safe method of operating the specific machine.
The correct emergency procedures, capacities and limitations to enable safe operation.

Selection and use of fall protection equipment covering, as a minimum:

• Harness wearing; how to put it on and fit it properly
• Lanyard adjustment; adjusted for machine and candidate
• Attachment to the MEWP; designated anchor point and karabiner locking
• Proof of inspection; candidates to check if their harness has a proof of inspection (please note that inspection is not covered in this course. Current recommendations HSE and IPAF H1)

Who will benefit from this course IPAF Operator Training in the use of work equipment is a requirement to ensure compliance with health and safety legislation. IPAF (International Powered Access Federation) approved training is vital for anyone operating a mobile elevating work platform (MEWP). Successful candidates are issued with a PAL card (Powered Access Licence) which is proof of competence in the safe use of aerial work platforms. Boss Training is a member of IPAF and delivers IPAF approved training courses that is endorsed by the UK Contractors Group (UKCG).

You will be required to bring the following PPE;

• Hard hat
• Safety boots
• Hi-viz 

Candidates who do not have any of these items should make us aware of this at the time of booking.

PLEASE NOTE: LTC Training Services are unable to supply safety boots, in the case that you do not bring safety boots, we can sell them at £20.00 + VAT

Harnesses will be supplied on the day for the purposes of training.  If you do not own a harness you can purchase one from us prior to attending or on the day of training.  Candidates should also bring wet weather clothing in case of inclement weather and should wear full length trousers (no shorts). Writing materials will be provided. 

A good level of comprehension of both written and spoken
English is a requirement on all courses.

Please Note: As outlined on our course description, candidates will have 1 attempt to achieve the required pass mark on the theory test in the morning. If candidates do not pass they will not be able to continue the course.

Assessment Method:
Candidates must correctly answer at least 80% (24 out of 30) of the 30 questions asked in the multiple-choice theory test paper.
Candidates who do not successfully complete the Written Test Paper will not proceed further and will be advised of the reason(s) for the failure by the Instructor and shall be required to retake the training course in its entirety at a later date.
Trainees successfully completing the written test paper will then be asked to perform specified tasks whilst being observed by the Instructor. Candidates who do not successfully complete the practical assessment or who at any time place themselves or other attendees at serious risk shall be informed of the reason(s) for the failure by the Instructor and shall be required to retake the training course in entirety at a later date.
