Aims and Objectives This HSE recognised 3 day First Aid at Work (FAW) course covers the practical skills needed by a first aider in the modern workplace. The course will give candidates the confidence and knowledge to deal with first aid emergencies. 

On successful completion of this course candidates will receive a HSE recognised certificate (valid for 3 years) proving their training and competence in issuing first aid at work.

Please note that it is still recommended by the HSE however that candidates attend an annual refresher course in order to keep their skills and knowledge up-to-date.
Pre-Requisites We would recommend that candidates should be chosen for their ability to stay calm in emergencies, to be physically able to perform cardio pulmonary resuscitation for at least 5 minutes and be mentally robust enough to deal with the stresses expected in this role. 

Literacy and language comprehension are important requirements on all courses.

Course Content Understand the role of the first-aider including reference to:
 
The importance of preventing cross infection
The need for recording incidents and accidents
Use of available equipment
They will be able to assess the situation and circumstances in order to act safely, promptly and effectively in an emergency
Administer first aid to a casualty who is unconscious (including seizure)
Administer cardiopulmonary
resuscitation
Administer first aid to a casualty who is choking
Administer first aid to a casualty who is wounded and bleeding
Administer first aid to a casualty who is suffering from shock
Provide appropriate first aid for minor injuries (including small cuts, grazes and bruises, minor burns, scalds and small splinters)
Administer first aid to a casualty with:
•   Injuries to bones, muscles and joints. Including suspected spinal injuries
Who will benefit from this course The Health and Safety Regulations 1981 require employers to provide suitable first-aid equipment, facilities and personnel so that immediate assistance can be given to employees if they are injured or become ill at work. The regulations state that in order to provide first-aid, a person isn’t suitable unless they have undergone; 

The right training and qualifications approved by HSE; and
Any additional training if required
